Whenever I turn a new age, especially since being in college, I start to wonder things:
Am I where I'm supposed to be? What if I could surf everyday? Do this everyday? Do that everyday? Do nothing everyday? Do people think I don't do anything? Do people know I mostly can't handle talking to them for more than a simple "hey"? Do people look at me and think I look like a greasy person? Can they tell I wear the same two pairs of pants everyday? Do people think it's odd when I carry a camera around campus? Is it stupid to carry a camera around campus? IS it stupid to shoot on a polaroid camera? I don't think it is, but I understand why others would.
I first got into polaroid photography this past winter. I had been interested in darkroom photography and shot around with a 35 millimeter film camera, but had never taken too much interest in polaroids. But surprisingly (not actually surprising if you know my Mom), my Mom gifted me with one this past Christmas. Not too sure about what to expect and not instantly hooked, I started shooting. What I learned is that, although you seem to come up empty handed sometimes, you always learn to appreciate the picture that comes out. This was something I learned shooting with film, but not to the extent of a polaroid. Because with a polaroid, you're paying a lot more for one single shot. I would get out my receipt to check how much it is, but I used it as a tissue to blow my nose in; regardless, the price is around one dollar per shot.
With this price comes a pretty hefty weight to every shot. The bad thing is though, that I am stingy, but I suppose that it's good in this case. But I am even almost too stingy. I go through phases where I am simply too unmotivated to shoot, and times where I just can't buy another pack (being a broke college student sucks). At this age, though, I realize that I need to stop thinking about that. No matter the financial, social or whatever situation, you should always take the time to fuel your passions.
So for the past few months, I have been taking shooting a lot more seriously. As a child, I would bring my camcorder around everywhere and take random clips of everyday sightings. This is what I've been trying to do recently; taking photos of everyday life, from the mundane to the gory.
